Most probable doesn't mean certain. It is possible a hikki gets killed in a skirmish with a burglar or another kind of invader. But normally when the primary caregiver dies (usually, but not always, the mother) the hikki's death will follow shortly after. The body is normally discovered by it's decaying scent, and the number of roaches that crawl out from under the door.
