Sure it’s a big improvement over Republicans, but I still don’t see why I should vote for them over Democrats. That’s even ignoring the fact that a third party could never win in this country. The problem with pursuing centrist policy is that it’s relatively easy to move form centrism to rightism, but it’s not easy to go from leftism to rightism. The best thing you can do is create left wing government policy because people really don’t want to give that up after they get used to it

I think that's caused by the left being in power. Whoever is in power wants to stay in power and thus generates a us vs them sentiment. The left is more vicious and the right is more lenient.
Back in the 90s when the right was in power it was probably the other way around with the right being vicious and the left being the lenient ones. Centrists would probably have an easier time leaning left back then, as they will in the future when the cycle continues.
